The Indonesian Institute for Foreign Affairs (IIFA) is a national policy institute based at Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII). Committed to advancing Indonesia’s strategic presence in global diplomacy and international economic policy, IIFA provides a platform for informed analysis, global cooperation, and inclusive diplomacy. At a time when shifting global power dynamics demand thoughtful engagement, IIFA serves as a bridge between Indonesia and the world, amplifying the country’s voice in shaping equitable, sustainable, and rules-based global governance.
Indonesia in Active Dialogue with the World
To be a leading, independent institute that strengthens Indonesia’s role as an informed, engaged, and ethical global actor.
To promote Indonesia’s strategic and developmental perspectives in international affairs and global policy.
To connect diplomacy with international economic and development policy, particularly from a Global South lens.
To support capacity-building through research fellowships, visiting scholars, and cross-border academic exchanges.
To convene high-level dialogues and strategic networks that foster trust, cooperation, and inclusive multilateralism.
The IIFA Journey
The idea of IIFA began as more than an academic initiative—it was a strategic response to Indonesia’s urgent need for a neutral, globally connected, and university-based think tank.
As Indonesia’s global stature rises, so too does the expectation that it contribute constructively to international debates on climate, trade, development, security, and civilisational dialogue. Yet, the country lacked a dedicated institution that could offer evidence-based policy input, amplify its perspectives in global forums, and train the next generation of scholar-diplomats.
IIFA was born out of this strategic gap.
With the support of UIII, the institute was founded to ensure Indonesia’s voice is heard—not only in the corridors of diplomacy but in the ideational arena where norms, rules, and frameworks are contested and created.
As a campus-based think tank, IIFA upholds neutrality, public accountability, and academic freedom. It also answers the call for research-led policymaking, providing space for creative thinking, collaborative partnerships, and capacity-building across borders.
At its core, IIFA is not just a think tank; it is a national infrastructure for global thought, dedicated to making Indonesia not only a participant but a thought leader in shaping the future of international cooperation.
