Centre for Strategic & Foreign Policy

The Centre for Strategic and Foreign Policy (CSFP) at the Indonesian Institute for Foreign Affairs (IIFA) is committed to advancing rigorous scholarship and policy-relevant analysis on Indonesia’s evolving role in regional and global affairs. As Indonesia consolidates its position as a regional power and a growing middle power, understanding its strategic choices and foreign policy behaviour has never been more important.

The Centre provides a platform for systematic study of Indonesia’s foreign policy, combining archival work, strategic analysis, and academic research. By building authoritative resources and fostering dialogue, the CSFP seeks to illuminate the principles, practices, and trajectories that shape Indonesia’s engagement with the world.

Research Priorities
The CSFP’s research and knowledge-building activities focus on four core areas:

  1. Codification of Indonesian Foreign Policy

    • Mapping the key themes, doctrines, and strategic priorities underpinning Indonesia’s foreign policy since independence.

    • Providing a systematic account of Indonesia’s strategic positioning in regional and global contexts.

  2. Corpus of Official Foreign Policy Documents

    • Collecting and curating speeches from the presidential and ministerial level.

    • Building an accessible archive of reports, official statements, and strategic policy documents that inform Indonesia’s external engagement.

  3. Academic Corpus on Indonesia’s Foreign Policy

    • Developing a comprehensive database of scholarly works on Indonesian foreign policy, both in Bahasa Indonesia and English.

    • Facilitating cross-disciplinary engagement by connecting international scholarship with Indonesian academic contributions.

  4. Strategic Analysis and Policy Engagement

    • Producing timely policy briefs and analyses on Indonesia’s strategic posture and responses to global challenges.

    • Engaging policymakers, scholars, and practitioners in dialogue on Indonesia’s role as a middle power in an evolving world order.

Through its codification, archival, and analytical work, the CSFP aims to become a leading hub for the study of Indonesian foreign policy—bridging scholarship, policy, and practice, while contributing to a deeper global understanding of Indonesia’s strategic agency.
