About Me

Dr. Suryana is a Fellow at the Indonesian Institute for Foreign Affairs (IIFA) and a Visiting Fellow at the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore. He specialises in political science, with a focus on religion and politics, governance, and social conflict in Southeast Asia. He earned his Ph.D. from the School of Culture, History, and Language at the Australian National University (ANU) in 2018, where he also completed a Master’s in Public Policy. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta. Prior to joining UIII, Dr. Suryana taught at the School of Government and Public Policy (SGPP) Indonesia and at Swiss German University. Beyond academia, he has served as a consultant for various institutions, including USAID, Search for Common Ground, the Indonesian Ministry of Bureaucratic and Administrative Reform, and the Jakarta Provincial Government. Dr. Suryana is the author of The State and Religious Violence in Indonesia: Minority Faiths and Vigilantism (Routledge, 2020). His scholarly work has appeared in leading journals such as Asian Studies Review and Southeast Asia Research, contributing to critical debates on religious pluralism, state-society relations, and minority rights in Indonesia and the region.
